Small raised box gardens For those who are starting out and have enough outdoor space to plant a small garden, start with small makeshift or kitset raised gardens. You can add small trellising and grow upwards with the likes of beans or cucumbers while planting lettuce and other low lying veggies in the front. So how can you keep rodents out the garden, and from potentially entering your home?  Thanks for sharing this. It’s nice to see bloggers post not only their successes but their failures also. Look into using bunny manure. It’s the best for gardening. If you have rabbits, just put hay underneath them and use it straight. My garden thrives with it. I usually have a beautiful happy garden but last summer I did something similar. I’ve always done the deep mulch method with hay with great success. Last year I wanted something cheaper and easier than hay so I got a dump truck load of 3 year old composted wood chips. A friend of mine had used them with great success. It was $125 for a whole dump truck load. That seemed perfect! Literally a week after putting the mulch on my beautiful and flourishing garden, everything got bacterial wilt and blight. I knew it had to the mulch because this was in May and I planted everything in February (we live in Florida). Up until that point everything was growing and was doing better than ever. I cried. Seriously. It’s hard because gardening is so much work. Mine is about 2000 sq ft so it was a lot. I won’t be making that mistake again. Now I’m worried about hay! Keep us posted. Thin plants to recommended distance to reduce shading. Move garden to sunnier location. My garden is overlooked on several sides Hello am66,     Is there any way you can find a space in your back garden for the feeders, I assume that is fenced off for your greyhound as he would be a good deterrent to the cats.  I’m sorry you found feathers and remains of a bird but it is possible a Sparrowhawk could have predated the bird and not a cat as I think cats tend to take their prey away/ home and in tact.     There is an ultrasonic device that seems to get good reviews on Amazon website  HERE   and I know a fellow member on here (  Monkeycheese ) has just purchased two of them so maybe when he has had chance to test them out he can advise you how well they work.    Good luck, hope the cats get the message to stay out of your garden so you can continue to enjoy the visiting birds.    While I was away from my house for a year, no one tended to my garden. I came back and the weeds were 10′ tall! They had also taken root in the brick walkways and caused a lot of upheal of blocks. Now, no matter how many weeds I pull, more keep coming back. And the roots of some are so huge and can’t even be dug pu without disturbing so many bricks and the raised garden beds. What can I do, short of ripping everything out sand starting all over? Don’t let aphids ruin your garden. Use these tips to keep your plants safe. Thanks for posting this. I always feel like I am the only one who fails at gardening. Like you, I will try again! Weeds are tough competitors in a garden. Learn about killing weeds before… Solution: While there is no one-size-fits-all solution for pests, there is one thing you can do to reduce the chances of your landscape becoming an all-you-can-eat buffet: garden in raised beds. While this won’t solve all your problems, a raised bed helps deter small- and medium-sized animals. Add a fence or netting to deter deer and birds as well.  Is a white garden a cliché? We used Milestone weed killer in the past on our spotted knapweed. It is an aminopyralid. The label is very specific with the warnings about plant sensitivity, even certain pine and fir trees are sensitive. If you spray a pasture, animals do not have to be removed and there is no meat/milk withdrawl (just quoting the labels, here), but they do warn about moving the animals to a pasture with susceptible species (clover, alfalfa, etc.) within a certain number of days and all manure must be aged for at least one year before being used on susceptible crops. Unfortunately, unless we grow everything ourselves, we never know what has been used. I did have an issue like that one year, and it was way back when I had used the aminopyralid spray and planted some extra tomato plants outside the general garden area and that is exactly how they looked. I seem to have found a solution to deer. Just a bb or pellet gun. Mine do not come back. I hate stinging them, as I am the animal rescue type. But my whole lawn is a garden, and nothing was working. Did this as a child for my dad. A few years back, my own son (without my knowing) did that for me. Vegetable Gardening for Beginners! Your complete guide on how to grow a vegetable garden—from scratch! Are there any space-stretching tricks I can use? An attractive standard plant, urn or statuette at the end of the garden will provide a focal point and draw the eye to the garden’s furthest part, tricking you into seeing it as larger than it is. Benches with lift-up lids give more storage. If you need a play area for children, swap tiles for decking in the lower part of the garden and sink a hidden sandpit beneath a section of it. ? Remedies: Mild to moderately over-fertilized plants may be able to be saved by flooding the garden bed with water to push the fertilizer deep into the soil. Severely burnt plants may never recover, so if it’s early in the growing season you may want to compost them and replant. The most important benefit of fungi, however, is their capacity to create crumb structure in your soil. This is the most desirable characteristic for garden soils. A soil with crumb structure can breathe freely while allowing ease of root growth and ideal water infiltration. Earthworms move unimpeded through these aggregates, as do beneficial nematodes and microarthropods. You can plunge your hands deep into this medium and it smells good enough to eat. Gardening is pure pleasure when you have achieved this holy grail of good soil management, but it is not possible without nurturing your fungal workforce. Life Force® Instant Humus™ involves super-concentrated soluble humic acid granules. Two teaspoons of these black crystals are added to a watering can full of water, and applied to 10 m2 of soil. You will almost hear your fungi rejoice! Will it take much looking after? Once planted, this garden will look after itself — aside from the odd pruning of climbers, such as clematis, and the addition of some bright summer blooms, like lilies or poppies.
