I drew a picture of a garden and a sidewalk being built around the outside. The height of the inside (garden) was 17 ft and the width was 20 feet. Then, I made a 3-foot corner around all four corners of the garden. So, the height of the exterior was 17 + 3 + 3 = 23 feet, while the width was 3 + 3 + 20 = 26 feet. So, the perimeter of the inside is 74 feet and the perimeter of the outside is 98 feet. I added these two to get 172 feet as the total perimeter. Inexorably, I deemed that 172 feet of lumber was needed for the perimeter of the walk. Is that safe to assume or am I misinterpreting the question/what it is asking for? I am sooo grateful for this post! I have had “bad luck” with my tomatos for the past 3 to 4 years, and I could not for the life of me figure out what I was doing wrong! Now I see that I had done the same as you had, adding manure (from my neighbors aged cow manure pile) to our garden. I used to grow beautiful tomatos, and beamed with pride at my quarts of lovely canned tomatos lined up on my shelf, waiting to be enjoyed in the midst of winter! I guess pride came before the fall! LOL! I have tried everything I could think of to try to deal with the problem, even moving all my tomatos to big pots on my porch, BUT I was still using soil from my garden! AhHa! My mom had a bumper crop of tomatos this year, using big pots on her porch, but the only soil she used was Miracle Gro Moisture Control soil, and I am going to do this next year! I don’t like having to buy soil when we have access to all the free manure to amend our soil, but, in light of this info, I think that we may have to, at least for our tomato plants. I have not noticed any of my other plants having the problems like the tomatos, so at least my garden will not be totally unusable next summer. For example, meta-design aims at design and implementation of systems by professional programmers such that the systems are amenable to redesign through tailoring (configuration and customization) by end-user programmers (Andersen and Mørch, 2009; Costabile et al., 2009; Fischer, 2009). In some large organizations, an expert end-user programmer, called a gardener,1 serves to ease or eliminate programming among the organization’s end-user community (Gantt and Nardi, 1992). Such a gardener creates reusable code, templates and other resources, and provides these to other users, whose programming tasks thereby become substantially simpler. While gardeners each focus on a particular end-user community, programming environments facilitate delegation of programming across communities by aiding reuse of code. For example, FireCrystal (Oney and Myers, 2009) is a Firefox plug-in that allows a programmer to select user interface elements of a webpage and view the corresponding source code. FireCrystal then eases creation of another web page by providing features to extract and reuse this code, especially code for user interface interactions. Another system, BluePrint (Brandt et al., 2010), is an Adobe Flex Builder plug-in that semi-automatically gleans task-specific example programs and related information from the web, and then provides these for use by end-user programmers. Still other systems are designed to emulate strategies or heuristics that users themselves appear to employ when looking for reusable code, thereby simplifying the task of choosing which existing programs to run or reuse (e.g. Gross et al., 2010; Scaffidi et al., 2009). The result is a scenario most gardeners at some point face: an ever-growing tower of pots and flats languishing in the shed, eventually to be thrown out. Question 3 is something that I’m starting to see as the bridge between “Length 12” and “Length x” from the original problem statement.  If you can do it with 1000, then you can do it with x.  Question 6 was also nice because some students used their formula to show that the garden length would not be a whole number if it used 2011 tiles, while other students made the reasonable observation that every garden tile number is even. So: you either 1) love moles enough to leave them alone, in which case they’ll constantly dig up your yard/ruin your garden, or 2) you like your lawn/garden without mole tunnels and mounds MORE than you love moles, which means getting rid of the moles by either trapping/re-homing them (which, as I said, will kill them 99 times out of 100) or setting kill traps. We had this exact same thing happen in our garden here in Prince George, BC and after talking to a local soil expert, doing some research as well as an experiment, came to the same conclusion. It is aminopyralid poisoning. Our potatoes and tomatoes are the most seriously affected with the mutant leaves that look like fiddleheads. Any legumes just did not grow at all and neither did the cucumbers or melons. It has been very disheartening as this was the first year I had started all my own seedlings as well. He buys hay locally but we have since found out that almost all of the people who sell hay in the area spray their crops with herbicide for thistles, clover, etc. Here we thought we were doing such a good thing for our soil and it turns out we poisoned it instead! We shared what we experienced with local growers at our local farmers’ market. Some were aware of the problem but others were not and this could impact their livelihood in a huge way.
