This year we will be launching a unique online garden design tutorial package at a fraction of the cost of any design fee.  We have created videos showing you how to survey your garden and how to use the simple basic principles of garden design. Together, we will design your very own outdoor living space which will lead you … up your own garden path! What are people’s thoughts on artificial turf? My friends got this for their permanently shady, fairly small garden and they say it’s the best thing they’ve ever bought for their house and means that their little one can play outside all year round. Are there any space-stretching tricks I can use? An attractive standard plant, urn or statuette at the end of the garden will provide a focal point and draw the eye to the garden’s furthest part, tricking you into seeing it as larger than it is. Benches with lift-up lids give more storage. If you need a play area for children, swap tiles for decking in the lower part of the garden and sink a hidden sandpit beneath a section of it. ? However, that changed, and suddenly it was taking over a huge section of our garden fence. For a few weeks, things were great, more and more blooms, more and more climbing. Then, suddenly, leaves started turning yellow, then brown. It all seemed to radiate from the base of the plant. After posting pictures of the problem on our Facebook page, the best advise was that a vine borer had got into it and to take it out before it hatched its eggs. So that is what I did. I tore it down, pulled it up, and split it open. You know what I found? The inside of a cucumber vine. That’s it. No bugs, no holes. Many gardens are overrun with the slow-moving creatures. https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/deer/deer-repellents.htm https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/animals/keep-rabbits-out-of-gardens.htm My garden is too long and narrow In a Winters walnut orchard, Glassman designed a resort-like pool and patio combination. The mosaics of a Land Park artist became part of her garden makeover. A boring, tired, lawn-heavy Davis landscape transformed into an inspirational zen garden. Deterrents fall into two categories: scent and sound. The problem with the latter is that we have a dog who will hate the high pitched emissions. That leaves finding things that moles don’t like the smell of and either sticking them into the tunnel or sprinkling them around the garden and watering them in. Kendra Wilson has access to some of the most remarkable gardens in England, while dissecting them for the online publication Gardenista. With experience as a writer, picture editor, and designer for Vogue, Condé Nast Traveler, and Observer Food Monthly, she brings her unique perspective to the way gardens look and why they work. One bug does not make a problem! In nature, there are always some garden pests chewing on plants; that’s just the way it is. However, not all pest damage is significant enough to warrant action. Even the healthiest gardens encounter bugs at one time or another, yet they still produce a beautiful harvest. As gardeners, we must each consider the level of pest activity that we are willing to tolerate. “We’ve been wanting to do a book together for awhile,” said Glassman, who also credited Ballinger with making the book about more than California gardening. Solution: There are a few different options to help hold back soil such as rock gardens, retaining walls, erosion fabric or even terracing. The easiest option is to grow a deep-rooting ground cover such as pachysandra (shade) or creeping rosemary (sun). My garden is full of old rubbish Now a very good thing is happening in 2017. Kendra has written a new book, The Problem with My Garden, which offers succinct and sensible solutions to nearly 60 common dilemmas gardeners face. In each chapter, from “My yard has no privacy” to “My garden is windy,” she dispatches with wit such seemingly intractable obstacles as steep slopes, slugs, too much paving, too many trees, and an aversion to orange flowers. I am turning 70 in a few months and Hubs is 74. So it may be that we are more susceptible than you younger gardeners. But it turns out oak leaves harbor mites, and we have been bitten by them. I had a terrible time with what I thought was chiggers in the garden, worse than I could remember since we started gardening here in 2011. And now I have a rash on my leg I cannot get to go away. I’ve been researching and I think that one of two things have happened: 1) I am being bitten by oak mites and not chiggers, and they are triggering an allergy of some kind; and/or 2) I have gotten fungus on my hands from the wood chip pile, and then scratched my chigger (or mite, whichever) bites, thus allowing the fungus to get into my skin. Hubs has had a rash on one of his legs for about six months. We’ve shown our rashes to doctors and they say, “contact dermatitis”. Though the ointments they prescribe do not help. Hubs had an additional problem in that he was shoveling wood chips from the pile and got in a cloud of “dust” which must’ve been fungal in nature. All night that night, he hacked and coughed. Fortunately, those symptoms were gone by morning, and he has since had a chest xray as the normal part of a checkup and everything was ok. But it was kind of scary. We’ll be going back to the doctor and telling them what we think might be causing our rashes now, since doctors these days won’t waste their time doing any detective work and it’s just all too easy to lump every skin problem into “contact dermatitis” and send the patient away. The only problem is, we have to wait almost a month to get in to see the doctor. Sheesh. So much can happen in a month. So I’m trying to think about what I might try in the meantime. Maybe tea tree oil, neat? Remedies: Set up rabbit- and deer-proof fencing around your garden. Use deterrents for other pets. If you have gophers, moles and similar pests in your area, consider building raised beds. Free personalised gardening advice If a rocky slope is your problem area, then a rock garden design presents itself naturally enough as a landscape solution. Why not use the terrain’s rockiness to your advantage, rather than fighting it? If you live in a region dominated by drought (see below), you may even wish to build a rock garden on flat land, planting the rock crevices with drought-tolerant plants to form a xeriscape. Q. Mike: I’m hoping you can help kick-start a new program at our community garden. Historically, we’ve had one large cold compost heap that was an unmanaged eyesore. The « compost committee » has chosen to move in a new direction and have the individual gardeners create and manage their own composting. Some gardeners are planning to group together and build large 3-bin systems; others just want a small pile for their own 10 x 10 plot. Either way, we’re urging them to learn ‘hot composting’ techniques, as I know that compost that heats up quickly is far superior to the cold kind, and takes much less time to finish. Any advice to get us started on the right track? Most are problems gardeners experience almost anywhere, but some problems are more specific to our area. In our resource guide, we have followed an integrated pest management approach where simple, safe, and less invasive strategies are listed first. This is the same approach we use with visitors to our walk-in Plant Doctor service located in the Kemper Center for Home Gardening as well as with callers to our phone-in Horticultural Answer Service. Recommendations using chemical pesticides, though not excluded in an integrated pest management approach, generally appear lower down in the list of recommended strategies. Strictly organic strategies are pointed out. You can look up pest and problems by plant or pest category.
