last year I had something eating my cantaloupe , for every 6 it got I got 2 not good odds there. I thought it was a mole because there is a hole in the garden box (fenced in) and inside of the fence are 3 12×12 garden boxes . there are what I had always been told are mole trails through the yard kind of a country setting with creek down over the hill. But I see you say they primarily eat insects and grubs so what would be eating my cantaloupe ? If it didn’t eat so many I wouldn’t mind oh tomatoes too, but the ratio me to them is not even close to fair, and what ever it is has to go. what do you suggest is eating everything and what should I do? also could it be rabbits and the mole trails are just coincidental? Report that your garden waste was not collected, or that your bin is damaged or missing. I deep mulch, but I use my own herbicide free grass. I let the yard get embarrassingly long, then mow it. I let it dry, rake it, and deep mulch the garden. You can buy or make compost, but if you buy, it must be certified compost. If you use manure, use something like chicken manure because they don’t eat hay. The Grazon can persist through digestion unfortunately. A native New Yorker, she spent three decades in the Midwest before recently returning to the East Coast; that gave her a different gardening perspective to Glassman’s California experience and broadened the book’s overall appeal, he said. Thanks for the follow up. Sounds like the plants are on the right track. Happy gardening! In this area we have dug down and replaced it with new topsoil, dug compost and manure in, we also have put a sump in which on clay isn’t the best but it takes some of the water which would otherwise run towards the house (slope on the garden is towards the house). The difference for the better us obvious this year. If a rocky slope is your problem area, then a rock garden design presents itself naturally enough as a landscape solution. Why not use the terrain’s rockiness to your advantage, rather than fighting it? If you live in a region dominated by drought (see below), you may even wish to build a rock garden on flat land, planting the rock crevices with drought-tolerant plants to form a xeriscape. Don’t let weeds become the enemy of your garden. See tips and tricks on how to… These links will help you with some shade gardening ideas. Pollinate with brush, or by shaking plant so that pollen will fall to female flowers (depending on kind). Attract pollinators to garden. Do not kill pollinating insects. i have trouble with critters eating my garden I use woodchips too, Paul Gautschi gardening method, but I experienced much of what Jill and others have (so thank you Jill for blogging your experience). In retrospect, I need to add more chips during the year like you do, because they do compost during winter-spring so that by summer, there’s no longer at least 4″ of chips, such that the soil below got very dry still especially during our prolonged hot spell in PA. The very bad news is the chemtrails above in our skies, containing metals like aluminum which stunts plant growth. The metals rain down and pollute. Now Paul thinks the chips filter out pollutants, so I may add much more than 4″ next year. Still, the soil takes time to build up healthiness with this method. A community garden surrounding the post office in Westport is facing backlash from USPS officials. How about adding VOLES to the list of garden Pests. I have one that has eaten everyone of my marigolds and chwews off one whole patch of Bee Balm. Now the beast is eating my tomatoes to get all of the seeds. Yes it is a vole because I have seen him or them scurrying in an around my planting beds. I have put out three live catch traps and all have remained empty. I put out glue boards up next to the foundation of the house and he kicked dirt all over them. I put out poison and it hasn’t been touched in two weeks. These thinks are the bane of my summer gardening. 300px wide On a garden or driveway Before you begin, you need to narrow your wish-list to your top priorities. In a bigger garden, for example, you might have a barbecue area; in a small garden, you may have to settle for creating a paved space for a portable barbecue and devise a storage plan when it’s not in use. Small family gardens are hardest to plan as you’ll need to find room for a play area. I’m sad you’ve had such trouble with your garden this year. I want to suggest you research the use of chemtrails in your area. These are easy to see in the sky when they’re being dropped from airplanes. We created a clear plastic roof over our garden to avoid their harmful chemicals. I believe it helped us with our first garden this year. Chemtrails are happening all over the world and have been for quite awhile. You can search “chemtrails” on the web. It is also called Geo-Engineering. Hi Jill, If you’re going to do raised beds, look into square foot gardening if you haven’t already. The author Mel Bartholomew has a blend that he uses for soil that drains well, but still retains moisture. It’s what I want to do next year. If a rockless incline is your problem area, consider the possibility of importing rock to build a rock garden (see above) from scratch — it will help hold back the soil and cut down on erosion. If you don’t care for rocks gardens, specifically, you may be more interested simply in growing a ground cover to stop erosion. But a more popular erosion-busting option is to build retaining walls. My sympathies! I had similiar problems in 2008. At that time there was little information about persistent herbicides. After 30 years of careful organic gardening, I almost gave up gardening. Fortunately, my whole garden wasn’t involved! I no longer use manure. For the last 3 years I have used barley straw from a nearby farmer who doesn’t use persistent herbicides. Yes, barley comes up but it is easy to pull. I don’t like gardening in the cold I love to garden; but am still a bit of a novice. I need all the help I can get. While American publishers are moving more material online, Australian book companies continue to put a premium on big format, photo-filled, hard cover books, said Glassman, author of seven outdoor living and garden-themed books including three for children. The calendar says it is January, but gardening enthusiasts have already begun planning for spring.  Seeds are being ordered, grow lights are being tested and garden centers will have a run on grow pots. Every gardener wants to improve upon last year’s results. Many will try to new strategies to protect against the pest that drove them crazy the previous year.  A big pest is the deer that come to browse in your yard. These beautiful creatures have now become a nuisance and your hard work and planning will have been in vain! If you are suspicious, but have not actually seen the deer snacking, footprints and droppings are a sure sign that they have been in your yard.  Also, typical signs of deer damage are plants with ripped or jagged edges leaves and tree bark with score marks.   An adult deer eats 6-10 pounds of greenery per day so you will need a definite plan to keep the deer out of the garden.  A fence is a sure way to keep them out, but costly and may take away from the natural beauty of your property.  Deer resistant plants can be planted around the plants that the deer are targeting. For example: plants with furred leaves or spines and that have a strong smell will be less appealing to them. Surround your garden with herbs with a strong scent which will mask the aroma of your annuals. Repellents are another way to deter deer. Because deer have such a keen sense of smell repellents can be very effective.  Just as the wonderful smell of your flower garden attracts, repellents can do the opposite with odoriferous ingredients.  Bobbex Deer Repellent is proven the most effective on the market and can be used year-round to protect against the deer.  So while you are planning your garden, plan on all natural, environmentally friendly Bobbex Deer and Animal Repellents. erogan deseo Maxman Maxman Masculin Active Eron Plus erogran Atlant Gel Tonus Fortis Eron Plus
