The grey garden slug, Derocerus reticulatum, is a major pest in gardens throughout the Willamette Valley. This slug eats a leaf in a garden.  (Photo: Robin Rosetta of the Oregon Stat) On a garden or driveway What animal it might be will depend on your location. It is likely not a mole, because of its diet. Voles (similar to mice) dig shallow tunnels that run along the lawn, as moles do; these rodents can be destructive in the garden. Other small rodents, such as mice might be a possibility as well. Chipmunks also dig tunnels, although you might not see the tunnels running along the surface. Gophers leave mounds of dirt at tunnel entrances, but not tunnels along the grass. Large holes could be a woodchuck, but they don’t have shallow tunnels. Rabbits, crows, raccoons, squirrels, coyotes, deer . . . just about any animal that eats fruit as part of its diet will take advantage of a melon. Raccoons like melons (and corn) especially. What animal it is will affect how you protect the fruit. Good luck! One of the most common questions I get asked as I traverse the country hosting garden workshops is, “what do I do about possums?” It is guaranteed that there is at least one bucket such that it is possible to water the garden in integer number of hours using only this bucket. I’m daunted by the garden I’ve inherited Report that your garden waste was not collected, or that your bin is damaged or missing. My garden collapses after June There is nothing to look at in winter The key to your small-space urban gardening success has a lot to do with the types of pots or planters you select. Because wireless devices such as smartphones are often limited to the content provided by their carriers, the portion of the Web that is available to wireless users is frequently referred to as a walled garden. Speaking of the Web as a whole, AOL is generally considered the major – and most successful – practitioner of the walled garden approach. According to a spokesperson from Disney (arguing against the recent AOL – Time Warner merger), 85% of AOL users never leave AOL territory; according to The Economist, almost 40% of the time Americans spend on the Web is within the confines of AOL’s walled garden. Other ideas for avoiding or minimizing plastic in the garden? Please share! To be honest, this whole issue bothers me very, very deeply. Composted manure is cheap, it’s natural (most of the time), and is readily available. If we can no longer use it on our gardens, what then? The same goes for hay mulch… I can hardly stand the thought of being stripped of these options due to herbicides. I’m still ruminating on these thoughts… I’ll share more in an upcoming post. Hi everyone, I have been feeding the birds in my garden for sometime, i don’t have a great variety of birds, mostly blackbird & sparrows but its nice to see them feeding. However, it looks like someone near by,( i don’t know who), has acquired a couple of cats  and i have seen them in my garden. I have a greyhound and I am sure that if the cats get chased by him they won’t be back in a hurry however my dog does not go in front garden as it is not secure. yesterday my worst fears were confirmed when I came in and found feathers and remains of a bird in the front garden > I am so upset, and I don’t know whether to carry on putting food out now. I have to say I am not a big fan of cats because of the sheer amount of harm they do to wildlife, a lot of problems could be solved by people keeping them in from dawn till dusk which is when they kill the most birds. From past experience things to deter cats never seem to work, but if anyone has any ideas i would be pleased to hear them 🙂 Hace you thought trying industrial hemp? I read is fantastic for replacing hay and for mulching! Not expensive at all. Research it and let me know. I wish I had land but I am a balcony gardener :-). Blessings! Mike: I’m hoping you can help kick-start a new program at our community garden. Historically, we’ve had one large cold compost heap that was an unmanaged eyesore. The « compost committee » has chosen to move in a new direction and have the individual gardeners create and manage their own composting. Some gardeners are planning to group together and build large 3-bin systems; others just want a small pile for their own 10 x 10 plot. Either way, we’re urging them to learn ‘hot composting’ techniques, as I know that compost that heats up quickly is far superior to the cold kind, and takes much less time to finish. Any advice to get us started on the right track? I’ve alluded several times in my newsletter, and here on the blog, that I’ve had a rather bizarre, and quite unproductive gardening year. Remedies: Water more! Set up a small irrigation system to water for you at regular intervals. Add shade cloth to garden beds to help reduce water evaporation. Mix more clay or soil into your garden bed to improve its ability to hold water. Adding mulch may also help plants conserve water. Question 3 is something that I’m starting to see as the bridge between “Length 12” and “Length x” from the original problem statement.  If you can do it with 1000, then you can do it with x.  Question 6 was also nice because some students used their formula to show that the garden length would not be a whole number if it used 2011 tiles, while other students made the reasonable observation that every garden tile number is even. We have made a few inquiries via the internet and bought a guidance pack from WHSmith. It would seem to me, however, that because my son receives a regular fixed rate and has no say as to what jobs he undertakes, he has to be considered an employee of our friend. I think cleaners can count themselves as self-employed and undertaking gardening doesn’t seem so far removed. On the Internet, a walled garden is an environment that controls the user’s access to Web content and services. In effect, the walled garden directs the user’s navigation within particular areas, to allow access to a selection of material, or prevent access to other material. An Internet service provider (ISP) may or may not allow users to select some of the Web sites contained or barred from the garden. Although the walled garden does not actually prevent users from navigating outside the walls, it makes it more difficult than staying within the environment. ISPs want to fence in users for a number of reasons. In 1999, for example, America Online (AOL) UK’s Kid Channel established a walled garden to prevent access to inappropriate Web sites. However, a common reason for the construction of walled gardens is for the profits they generate: vendors collaborate to direct consumer’s Internet navigation to each others’ Web sites and to try to keep them from accessing the Web sites of competitors.
