Two very good things happened in 2012. Soon after the launch of Gardenista (No. 1), UK-based Kendra Wilson became our first contributing writer. She immediately took our readers—and me—by the hand and began to gently reassure us there is nothing scary or complicated about gardening. I am sooo grateful for this post! I have had “bad luck” with my tomatos for the past 3 to 4 years, and I could not for the life of me figure out what I was doing wrong! Now I see that I had done the same as you had, adding manure (from my neighbors aged cow manure pile) to our garden. I used to grow beautiful tomatos, and beamed with pride at my quarts of lovely canned tomatos lined up on my shelf, waiting to be enjoyed in the midst of winter! I guess pride came before the fall! LOL! I have tried everything I could think of to try to deal with the problem, even moving all my tomatos to big pots on my porch, BUT I was still using soil from my garden! AhHa! My mom had a bumper crop of tomatos this year, using big pots on her porch, but the only soil she used was Miracle Gro Moisture Control soil, and I am going to do this next year! I don’t like having to buy soil when we have access to all the free manure to amend our soil, but, in light of this info, I think that we may have to, at least for our tomato plants. I have not noticed any of my other plants having the problems like the tomatos, so at least my garden will not be totally unusable next summer. Thank you so much for all the info!!! 🙂 Blessings, and Happy Fall! 🙂 Other ideas for avoiding or minimizing plastic in the garden? Please share! Hi am66 sorry you found the bird remains in your garden, but the feathers do suggest it could have been a Sparrowhawk.  I know how you feel as I have a cat problem too and have lost birds to them.  My favourite solution is to spray them with water, but that only works when I’m there.  You could try Hazel’s suggestions, but I wouldn’t advise you stop feeding.  If you have feeders on the ground make sure birds have a clear view all round and there’s nowhere a cat can spring out unseen.  Good luck. In the first test the best option is to choose the bucket that allows to water the segment of length 3. We can’t choose the bucket that allows to water the segment of length 5 because then we can’t water the whole garden. Our new home has similar garden lawn issues. If you can afford it employ prolawn. How do cutting gardens work? 4. What is one of the most interesting or unusual gardening dilemmas you have ever encountered? There is a spread in the book that says: ‘I have high walls and railings’. I wanted to put it in because the house, on a busy arterial road through East London, has the most incongruous front garden, which separates the whole property from its surroundings in such an imaginative way. It’s filled with jungly creepers and roses, climbing not only up the railings but over the facade of the four-story house. The planting is done with a lot of gusto, punctuated by brilliantly arcane statuary. “Hang the garden makeover; anyone who favors natural, twiggy plant supports can have an authentic English cottage garden,” she wrote in an early post, which breezily laid out the history of the cottage garden, explained the differences among various willow arbors and supports, and offered design suggestions for incorporating same into a landscape. In under 500 words. The ones I recommend have self-watering or wicking systems that solve the biggest headache for time-poor gardeners – remembering to water your plants! They also improve relationships with apartment neighbours below who understandably might not appreciate water cascading onto their balcony. Hi everyone, I have been feeding the birds in my garden for sometime, i don’t have a great variety of birds, mostly blackbird & sparrows but its nice to see them feeding. However, it looks like someone near by,( i don’t know who), has acquired a couple of cats  and i have seen them in my garden. I have a greyhound and I am sure that if the cats get chased by him they won’t be back in a hurry however my dog does not go in front garden as it is not secure. yesterday my worst fears were confirmed when I came in and found feathers and remains of a bird in the front garden > I am so upset, and I don’t know whether to carry on putting food out now. I have to say I am not a big fan of cats because of the sheer amount of harm they do to wildlife, a lot of problems could be solved by people keeping them in from dawn till dusk which is when they kill the most birds. From past experience things to deter cats never seem to work, but if anyone has any ideas i would be pleased to hear them 🙂 But what if you want to live a healthier lifestyle and grow your own food? What if you’re time poor or you don’t have the space to maintain a large garden to grow your own food? While American publishers are moving more material online, Australian book companies continue to put a premium on big format, photo-filled, hard cover books, said Glassman, author of seven outdoor living and garden-themed books including three for children. Where: One of the most destructive insect pests attacking small trees, shrubs and gardens. Oh My Gosh, when you described what happen to your garden happened to my garden I planted 50 foot row of corn and 6 plants came up and never did get bigger than 12 inches. My green beans I had 4 plants and picked 3 beans off. My husband dumped manure and old hay out of the goat/sheep barn and he feed hay which I am sure had been sprayed. Thank you for telling us about your problem. But gardens also provide a safe place for rodents, giving them shelter and readily available food sources.  My garden is excessively hot and dry I’ve visited Patrick’s community garden; it’s a nice little urban oasis. But that urban setting makes being realistic about potential vermin problems crucial. Its very easy to breed the nasty, dangerous things, and much harder to get the population to go in the other direction. So here are some ideas. Other ideas for avoiding or minimizing plastic in the garden? Please share! What would you suggest to deter monkeys from raiding the garden? This year was our first year having a vegetable garden. We planted the tomatoes in Spring, and in just a few months we were overloaded with tomatoes. HUNDREDS of them. We hired some gardeners to fill the veggie beds with the right mix of soil, hay, etc. We STILL have tomatoes coming! They are AMAZING!! While a living cover is preferable, at least a mulch provides food and protection to the soil and its inhabitants. Nutrition gardeners gradually embrace this nurturing instinct, as they develop a genuine reverence for their soil. They become soil lovers. Question 3 is something that I’m starting to see as the bridge between “Length 12” and “Length x” from the original problem statement.  If you can do it with 1000, then you can do it with x.  Question 6 was also nice because some students used their formula to show that the garden length would not be a whole number if it used 2011 tiles, while other students made the reasonable observation that every garden tile number is even.
