last year I had something eating my cantaloupe , for every 6 it got I got 2 not good odds there. I thought it was a mole because there is a hole in the garden box (fenced in) and inside of the fence are 3 12×12 garden boxes . there are what I had always been told are mole trails through the yard kind of a country setting with creek down over the hill. But I see you say they primarily eat insects and grubs so what would be eating my cantaloupe ? If it didn’t eat so many I wouldn’t mind oh tomatoes too, but the ratio me to them is not even close to fair, and what ever it is has to go. what do you suggest is eating everything and what should I do? also could it be rabbits and the mole trails are just coincidental? You know about this, right? http://www.motherearthnews.com/organic-gardening/pest-control/herbicide-damage-zmgz13fmzsto.aspx Once again, it is always better to have as many different plants in the blend as feasible, in recognition of the “more the merrier” principle. A good home garden cover crop blend might include ryegrass, barley, wheat, lucerne, three clovers, daikon radish, kale and silverbeet. You will note that all species are edible here and you could easily snip as required for a chlorophyll-packed addition to your green smoothie. You could even juice the young wheatgrass and barley grass at the height of their antioxidant powers. “The biggest lesson I learned from Michael…is that first gardens sleep, then creep and finally leap,” she said, because gardens change as they grow. “The second biggest lesson I learned from Michael is that there are no mistakes, but there are learning lessons. You plant something in the wrong spot, and you can dig it up and try it elsewhere, or try something different next time.” Report that your garden waste was not collected, or that your bin is damaged or missing. For testing your soils contact your State University the Ag Extension. You can contact  your state Department of Agriculture. You may want to try living mulches. They have been a great alternative for me, as well as improving the overall soil condition. There is great information out there. http://www.veganicpermaculture.com/agroecology.html Happy gardening! !! Garden Beds can be introduced away from the front of the room on the floor or sufficiently large table using squares of card or coloured paper similar to the tiles in the task. You will also need sets of tiles or blocks for each pair. Present the story shell and involve students in placing the cards. Record data from various lengths of garden bed on the white board and set the main challenge of If I tell you any number of plants can you tell me the number of tiles?. Invite students to return to their tables with a partner to explore this question with the tiles. Poly Plug can also be used if you adjust the story to be stepping stones bordering the garden beds in the same way. Kendra Wilson has access to some of the most remarkable gardens in England, while dissecting them for the online publication Gardenista. With experience as a writer, picture editor, and designer for Vogue, Condé Nast Traveler, and Observer Food Monthly, she brings her unique perspective to the way gardens look and why they work. Malta has made significant inroads into improving sustainability, as reflected in the M&G Garden 2017. These lessons – compost more, recycle water wherever possible, grow native plants – are ones easily brought home to any garden for the wider benefit of the environment. James’ design proves that putting the right plant in the right place creates a healthy environment. Crucially, they will inspire garden lovers to turn what were once problem patches into areas of opportunity and growth. In her latest book, The Problem with My Garden, she offers savvy solutions, insightful advice and inspiration for dealing with specific gardening problems. It would seem to me, however, that because my son receives a regular fixed rate and has no say as to what jobs he undertakes, he has to be considered an employee of our friend. I think cleaners can count themselves as self-employed and undertaking gardening doesn’t seem so far removed. Rubbish which has been left piled up in a garden is also cause for concern and could attract things like rats, mice and other pests. Obviously, this then creates a health hazard, with the Risk Of Rat Infestation, as well as attracting a whole host of other unwanted pests. Once again, the Environmental Health Department can forcibly order your neighbours to get rid of any rubbish or weeds if they are breaking the law, and legal action can ensue if they fail to do so. So how can you keep rodents out the garden, and from potentially entering your home?  Weeds are tough competitors in a garden. Learn about killing weeds before… In a Winters walnut orchard, Glassman designed a resort-like pool and patio combination. The mosaics of a Land Park artist became part of her garden makeover. A boring, tired, lawn-heavy Davis landscape transformed into an inspirational zen garden. I, too, know your pain and despair. We live on the western edge of Wyoming at 6000′. Our sons raise cattle, so left-over hay and manure from the cows and horses was easy to obtain. About mid way through the 2014 gardening season, after mulching my peas they just stopped. Hmm, must have been the heat. The beans were just a fair crop that year. 2015, no potatoes, no beans, no peas. They all came up beautifully, but when they started to put out roots – they became stunted, yellowed, twisted, and eventually died. The corn wasn’t bothered. Nor the pumpkin. I thought slugs, virus, disease, too much water. By the end of 2015, research was pointing to contamination. This year, began the same way. Transplants were healthy until put into the garden. Seeds germinate then look awful. After much research – I stopped using the manure tea (it seemed to be the worst culprit – maybe because it is concentrated). Planted all the radish seed I had. The ones I didn’t pick are the size of large potatoes and up to 4′ tall. Started more brassica transplants and planted them all over the garden. Interestingly, where I planted radishes or brassicas next to the peas, the peas actually produced a few peas and did not die immediately. Also, putting fermented molasses water on the potatoes seemed to help a little. We are now looking at cover crops as a way to help remediate. And all the wood stove ash will be dumped in the garden this winter. My garden is excessively hot and dry Mulch is one of the unsung heroes of landscape design. It’s highly portable, malleable and, for certain types of mulch, you can even make your own! Areas shaded by large trees can be transformed overnight from eyesores to eye-openers by applying an attractive mulch. For all its value, there is much misunderstanding about the use of this landscaping solution, and I receive numerous questions about garden mulch from readers. There are as many types of landscaping mulch as there are landscape challenges. Mulch is sometimes used in conjunction with landscape fabrics. Symptoms: Perennials and biennials are not returning the following year. Annuals are not thriving despite good garden conditions. My garden is under siege  When Apple first enabled third party applications on the iPhone1, they were accused by many of violating user freedoms by creating a walled garden, that being the requirement that all applications installed on the platform must be installed via their iOS App store2. Apple promoted this as allowing application vetting for performance and security: particularly on earlier iPhone models with limited resources, this ‘curation’ process of vetting the reliability and safety of applications may very well have had a positive impact on the growth of the platform.
