We luckily have a source that swears they assay each load of compost before they use in the 3- and 4-way garden soil mixes. We used them again this year when we remade the front yards raised beds. Everything we planted flourished. Extractive agriculture has seen the long-term, persistent removal of these broad spectrum trace minerals with no replacement. In fact, it could be argued that most plants no longer have the associated hormonal support to achieve their genetic potential. The exception is the seaweed plant, which exists in a soup comprising the perfect balance of all minerals. Consequently, this plant contains forty times more of these hormonal helpers than land plants. What does this mean for this sea plant? Well, it is the fastest-growing plant on the planet, producing 30 cm of new growth every day. We can boost our hormone-deficient, garden plants with seaweed fertiliser. In this context, kelp becomes an essential supplement for a healthy, vigorous, food-producing garden. But what if you want to live a healthier lifestyle and grow your own food? What if you’re time poor or you don’t have the space to maintain a large garden to grow your own food? We luckily have a source that swears they assay each load of compost before they use in the 3- and 4-way garden soil mixes. We used them again this year when we remade the front yards raised beds. Everything we planted flourished. And then I came across the Beagle, which was designed by a hobby inventor who was so distraught by the damage caused by moles in his garden and so fed up with the existing trapping technology that he invented a new one. I think you are correct in your conclusion of poisoning. I have had similar sstrange-looking plants in my garden over the years when I used the local fair’s compost in my garden area. This year I had whole plantings never germinate. (BTW: the word is ‘allude’). A community garden surrounding the post office in Westport is facing backlash from USPS officials. Very interested in this phenomenon. I’m in Virginia and just about every gardener in my neighborhood is complaining about their tomatoes this year. My sister who is a veteran gardener commented to me that she got her first ripe tomato in mid-July. She anticipated the usual progression of ripening tomatoes but the ripening just stopped. It took several weeks more for the tomatoes to ripen. “(A major step is) developing a master plan that you can follow all at once or slowly as you can afford to tackle all parts of your yard,” she added. “This is so important so the look is cohesive, and you don’t have to go back and rip up a vegetable garden when you realize that was the spot for your terrace.” The Kitchen Garden Grower’s Guide is a veritable encyclopaedia that provides simple guidance to the kitchen gardener and cook to bring fresh, inexpensive, and healthy food from your garden to your table. However, that changed, and suddenly it was taking over a huge section of our garden fence. For a few weeks, things were great, more and more blooms, more and more climbing. Then, suddenly, leaves started turning yellow, then brown. It all seemed to radiate from the base of the plant. After posting pictures of the problem on our Facebook page, the best advise was that a vine borer had got into it and to take it out before it hatched its eggs. So that is what I did. I tore it down, pulled it up, and split it open. You know what I found? The inside of a cucumber vine. That’s it. No bugs, no holes. Remedies: Use shade cloth in the garden or move the plants if they are in a container. Consider planting fast-growing trees and shrubs around the garden as a long-term solution. Gardenista’s members-only directory of landscape architects and garden designers. Finally, an answer to what happened to me this year. I had a beautiful bed of over 6′ tomato plants in my 6×6 garden I had carefully filled with rich earth composted in with commercial manure sold locally only to have them start with the curling leaves and withered plants. No insect damage, no sign of over watering or blight, just green withered leaves. Never happened before, blamed it on plants being diseased from purchase but had several different varieties. Now after reading all this info I have a different perspective. Not sure I’ll try again next year but if I do, I’ll certainly research back to this blog. Thank you for posting. Through its county agents, the Cooperative Extension Service gives individuals access to the resources at land-grant universities across the nation. These universities are centers for research in many subjects, including entomology (the study of insects) and agriculture. Each county within the United States has an Extension office, which is staffed with agents who work closely with university-based Extension specialists to deliver answers to your questions about gardening, agriculture, and pest control. You can find the phone number for your local county extension office in the local government section (often marked with blue pages) of your telephone directory or by clicking on the map below. There are several reasons for poor garden drainage. On new housing estates, it is often caused by compacted soil as a result of builders’ lorries and trucks. This combined with the mixing of sub-soil and topsoil when all the trenches and foundations were excavated often leads to a heavy, wet plot. While spotting a rat in the garden can be an unpleasant experience and they can damage fruit, vegetables, bulbs, plants, shed doors and wires, they should also be considered a serious health risk.  My wife’s family grows alfalfa and I have been using hay from their barn floors for the last few years to deep mulch my garden. Been loving it and my garden grows great……….however…..I have been worried about this issue as they recently planted a field of “Round Up Ready Alfalfa.” You can no longer assume that alfalfa isn’t sprayed with herbicides. They have been using grass killers in alfalfa fields for years. Most garden plants aren’t grasses so maybe that’s why it’s been a bit of a non issue……but the effect of round up residues may potentially bring about different concerns. Thanks for sharing Jill. I’ll be keeping a close eye on things as I have been hoping this wouldn’t be an issue. Oh my gosh I’m so sorry this happened to you! How discouraging. I hope you are able to enjoy at least some produce from your small garden by your house. And I certainly hope next year is much, much better! I think you are correct in your conclusion of poisoning. I have had similar sstrange-looking plants in my garden over the years when I used the local fair’s compost in my garden area. This year I had whole plantings never germinate. Question 3 is something that I’m starting to see as the bridge between “Length 12” and “Length x” from the original problem statement.  If you can do it with 1000, then you can do it with x.  Question 6 was also nice because some students used their formula to show that the garden length would not be a whole number if it used 2011 tiles, while other students made the reasonable observation that every garden tile number is even.
