Why does an industry that should be green have such a horrible track record when it comes to plastic, and what’s a home gardener to do? Q. Mike: I’m hoping you can help kick-start a new program at our community garden. Historically, we’ve had one large cold compost heap that was an unmanaged eyesore. The « compost committee » has chosen to move in a new direction and have the individual gardeners create and manage their own composting. Some gardeners are planning to group together and build large 3-bin systems; others just want a small pile for their own 10 x 10 plot. Either way, we’re urging them to learn ‘hot composting’ techniques, as I know that compost that heats up quickly is far superior to the cold kind, and takes much less time to finish. Any advice to get us started on the right track? https://www.smarticular.net/en/no-garden-no-problem-veggies-can-grown-indoors/ “(A major step is) developing a master plan that you can follow all at once or slowly as you can afford to tackle all parts of your yard,” she added. “This is so important so the look is cohesive, and you don’t have to go back and rip up a vegetable garden when you realize that was the spot for your terrace.” So … you’ve been reading my garden columns and I’ve convinced you that if a former news anchor can grow a garden on a balcony, how hard can it be? My garden is a car park What are people’s thoughts on artificial turf? My friends got this for their permanently shady, fairly small garden and they say it’s the best thing they’ve ever bought for their house and means that their little one can play outside all year round. What is the problem with your garden? I have used non-organic hay in the garden that I know was sprayed with broadleaf herbicides for 10 years and never had a problem with my plants. Maybe the concentrations weren’t high enough. But, 3 years ago, a neighbor up the valley from us sprayed his fields with 2,4-D and within a week my 150 tomato plants looked just like yours do. I didn’t connect it until the next year when another neighbor sprayed his fields with 2,4-D and I lost my tomato plants again and all of my lettuce that was just starting to head, bolted. I started talking to people and doing research and apparently, certain types of 2,4-D can really drift given the correct conditions. It affects plants drastically just by drift. Maybe you should look into the possibility that a neighbor sprayed something like 2,4-D on fields or lawns. Once it affects the plants, thats it for those plants. I let mine grow but they put on little to no flowers or fruit. This year, I planted in the same spot and didn’t remove the plant residue last fall. I waited until a week after the neighbor did his spraying and then transplanted my plants. Bingo, I had no trouble with my plants and they put on a good crop for us. So, it doesn’t seem to linger in the soil, at least for us. Plant balcony gardens For those lucky enough to have a small balcony space or a little courtyard, fill theses spaces up with edibles such as chives, rosemary beets and other salad greens. You can plant these in wall mounted planters. but the metals get into our water supply so now we need filters to water the garden… not sure how to do that yet. 6. Determine the maxima and minima as necessary. Remember to check the endpoints if there are any. Recall that we found above that $y = \dfrac{400}{x}$. Hence when the width $x = \sqrt{300}$, the garden’s length y must be: \[ \begin{align*} y &= \frac{400}{x} \\[8px] &= \frac{400}{\sqrt{300}} \\[8px] &= \frac{400}{\sqrt{100}\sqrt{3}}\\[8px] &= \frac{400}{10\sqrt{3}} = \frac{40}{\sqrt{3}} \end{align*} \] Hence Sam’s cost is minimized when the garden has The key to your small-space urban gardening success has a lot to do with the types of pots or planters you select. Every garden deserves a citrus tree. In all but the coldest districts, citrus trees feature in backyards. But not to worry. With photos and simple tips, she says, each chapter “is a garden tour…sharing the surprisingly simple ideas that can solve complex dilemmas.” And we’re off: The Beagle is designed to be used by ordinary gardeners. It has no finger trapping parts, simply a bright red plunger, that anyone can use as it requires no particular strength. I love moles and have waited two years in the hope that they might tunnel under the garden wall and back into the field where no one very much minds them at all.  With increasing amounts of mole hills on her lawn and moles now burrowing under her flowerbed, Tiffany Daneff looks at ways of controlling the moles in her garden. How do cutting gardens work? « I would be disappointed for us, but the biggest disappointment would be for her, » Burns said about the possibility of Stewart’s garden being removed. I don’t like gardening in the cold i have trouble with critters eating my garden In her latest book, The Problem with My Garden, she offers savvy solutions, insightful advice and inspiration for dealing with specific gardening problems. Another family of approaches seeks to delegate some of the programming responsibilities to other people. For example, meta-design aims at design and implementation of systems by professional programmers such that the systems are amenable to redesign through tailoring (configuration and customization) by end-user programmers (Andersen and Mørch, 2009; Costabile et al., 2009; Fischer, 2009). In some large organizations, an expert end-user programmer, called a gardener,1 serves to ease or eliminate programming among the organization’s end-user community (Gantt and Nardi, 1992). Such a gardener creates reusable code, templates and other resources, and provides these to other users, whose programming tasks thereby become substantially simpler. While gardeners each focus on a particular end-user community, programming environments facilitate delegation of programming across communities by aiding reuse of code. For example, FireCrystal (Oney and Myers, 2009) is a Firefox plug-in that allows a programmer to select user interface elements of a webpage and view the corresponding source code. FireCrystal then eases creation of another web page by providing features to extract and reuse this code, especially code for user interface interactions. Another system, BluePrint (Brandt et al., 2010), is an Adobe Flex Builder plug-in that semi-automatically gleans task-specific example programs and related information from the web, and then provides these for use by end-user programmers. Still other systems are designed to emulate strategies or heuristics that users themselves appear to employ when looking for reusable code, thereby simplifying the task of choosing which existing programs to run or reuse (e.g. Gross et al., 2010; Scaffidi et al., 2009). While spotting a rat in the garden can be an unpleasant experience and they can damage fruit, vegetables, bulbs, plants, shed doors and wires, they should also be considered a serious health risk.  6. On new housing estates, it is often caused by compacted soil as a result of builders’ lorries and trucks. This combined with the mixing of sub-soil and topsoil when all the trenches and foundations were excavated often leads to a heavy, wet plot.
