last year I had something eating my cantaloupe , for every 6 it got I got 2 not good odds there. I thought it was a mole because there is a hole in the garden box (fenced in) and inside of the fence are 3 12×12 garden boxes . there are what I had always been told are mole trails through the yard kind of a country setting with creek down over the hill. But I see you say they primarily eat insects and grubs so what would be eating my cantaloupe ? If it didn’t eat so many I wouldn’t mind oh tomatoes too, but the ratio me to them is not even close to fair, and what ever it is has to go. what do you suggest is eating everything and what should I do? also could it be rabbits and the mole trails are just coincidental? There will, however, be others that do not share the same enthusiasm when it comes to gardening, and will simply give their gardens a ‘once over’ with the lawn mower every few weeks. Then there will be the Problem Neighbours who see their gardens as an excuse to use it as a makeshift area in which to store excess rubbish. Have you added a commercial potting mix or soil to your window boxes or planting beds that contains a moisture-retentive polymer? These ploymers soak up water and then slowing release back into the soil; they have a clear jelly like appearance when hydrated. Another possibility is slime molds, a single-celled organism, that lives on dead plant material, often in lawns or garden beds. If you suspect slime mold, take a sample to a nearby office of the state agriculture office for identification. You can dig around slime mold organisms and remove them from the garden and dispose of them, but the spores that begin their growth may remain in the garden and form new organisms. This service is for people who do not want a garden design or a garden designer working in their garden but just have an area of the garden that they are not happy with.  « The $10 billion-a-year U.S. horticulture industry is based on cheap oil and cheap plastics, » writes Beth Botts in the Chicago Tribune. Botts has won awards for her eloquent writing on the problems of garden plastics. Chief among them is the lack of standards for materials, colors or sizes of pots and other garden plastics. Often the materials used are not even identified — making them devilishly hard to recycle. And the industry shies away from reuse because of the risks of spreading plant disease. Garden Beds can be introduced away from the front of the room on the floor or sufficiently large table using squares of card or coloured paper similar to the tiles in the task. You will also need sets of tiles or blocks for each pair. Present the story shell and involve students in placing the cards. Record data from various lengths of garden bed on the white board and set the main challenge of If I tell you any number of plants can you tell me the number of tiles?. Invite students to return to their tables with a partner to explore this question with the tiles. Poly Plug can also be used if you adjust the story to be stepping stones bordering the garden beds in the same way. A range of products and hand-picked gardening offers exclusively for Saga customers. How do cutting gardens work? Deterrents fall into two categories: scent and sound. The problem with the latter is that we have a dog who will hate the high pitched emissions. That leaves finding things that moles don’t like the smell of and either sticking them into the tunnel or sprinkling them around the garden and watering them in. We must then eliminate y as a variable. To do so, recall that Sam’s garden must have area $A = 400 \text{ ft}^2$. Since the garden’s rectangular area is given by $$A = xy = 400$$ we can solve for y in terms of x: $$y = \dfrac{400}{x}$$ Substituting this expression for y into our expression above for the cost C: \[ \begin{align*} C &= \dfrac{3}{2}y + 2x \\[8px] &= \dfrac{3}{2}\left(\dfrac{400}{x} \right) + 2x \\[8px] &= \frac{600}{x} + 2x \end{align*} \] The expression for C is now a function of the single variable x, as required. I have a lack of time for upkeep and need a garden that will be somewhat self-sufficient. I drew a picture of a garden and a sidewalk being built around the outside. The height of the inside (garden) was 17 ft and the width was 20 feet. Then, I made a 3-foot corner around all four corners of the garden. So, the height of the exterior was 17 + 3 + 3 = 23 feet, while the width was 3 + 3 + 20 = 26 feet. So, the perimeter of the inside is 74 feet and the perimeter of the outside is 98 feet. I added these two to get 172 feet as the total perimeter. Inexorably, I deemed that 172 feet of lumber was needed for the perimeter of the walk. Is that safe to assume or am I misinterpreting the question/what it is asking for? I am getting a bit « tripped up » of the fact that the problem gave me that, « to make the forms for the cement, we will need to buy some 2-by-4-inch lumber. » Weeds are tough competitors in a garden. Learn about killing weeds before… Hello am66,     Is there any way you can find a space in your back garden for the feeders, I assume that is fenced off for your greyhound as he would be a good deterrent to the cats.  I’m sorry you found feathers and remains of a bird but it is possible a Sparrowhawk could have predated the bird and not a cat as I think cats tend to take their prey away/ home and in tact.     There is an ultrasonic device that seems to get good reviews on Amazon website  HERE   and I know a fellow member on here (  Monkeycheese ) has just purchased two of them so maybe when he has had chance to test them out he can advise you how well they work.    Good luck, hope the cats get the message to stay out of your garden so you can continue to enjoy the visiting birds.    No garden, no problem: What can you grow in your apartment? Comments Remedies: Some garden beds don’t need to be fertilized but rather have their PH levels checked and have compost added. Use a natural and organic fertilizer whenever possible. We want to enrich everyone’s life through plants, and make the UK a greener and more beautiful place. Strong shapes such as circles (arranged diagonally) will make a small garden appear wider and longer. At the heart of this garden is an open grassy circle (to give kids room to run about), while the smaller paved circles are used as seating/dining areas. Stepping stones lead to a tucked-away play area. Children will also love the shape of the allium plant, or ornamental onion. It flowers in early summer, likes most soils and is easy to care for. If a rockless incline is your problem area, consider the possibility of importing rock to build a rock garden (see above) from scratch — it will help hold back the soil and cut down on erosion. If you don’t care for rocks gardens, specifically, you may be more interested simply in growing a ground cover to stop erosion. But a more popular erosion-busting option is to build retaining walls.
