However, it looks like someone near by,( i don’t know who), has acquired a couple of cats¬† and i have seen them in my garden. I have a greyhound and I am sure that if the cats get chased by him they won’t be back in a hurry however my dog does not go in front garden as it is not secure. yesterday my worst fears were confirmed when I came in and found feathers and remains of a bird in the front garden > I am so upset, and I don’t know whether to carry on putting food out now. I have to say I am not a big fan of cats because of the sheer amount of harm they do to wildlife, a lot of problems could be solved by people keeping them in from dawn till dusk which is when they kill the most birds. From past experience things to deter cats never seem to work, but if anyone has any ideas i would be pleased to hear them ūüôā Another family of approaches seeks to delegate some of the programming responsibilities to other people. For example, meta-design aims at design and implementation of systems by professional programmers such that the systems are amenable to redesign through tailoring (configuration and customization) by end-user programmers (Andersen and M√łrch, 2009; Costabile et al., 2009; Fischer, 2009). In some large organizations, an expert end-user programmer, called a gardener,1 serves to ease or eliminate programming among the organization’s end-user community (Gantt and Nardi, 1992). Such a gardener creates reusable code, templates and other resources, and provides these to other users, whose programming tasks thereby become substantially simpler. While gardeners each focus on a particular end-user community, programming environments facilitate delegation of programming across communities by aiding reuse of code. For example, FireCrystal (Oney and Myers, 2009) is a Firefox plug-in that allows a programmer to select user interface elements of a webpage and view the corresponding source code. FireCrystal then eases creation of another web page by providing features to extract and reuse this code, especially code for user interface interactions. Another system, BluePrint (Brandt et al., 2010), is an Adobe Flex Builder plug-in that semi-automatically gleans task-specific example programs and related information from the web, and then provides these for use by end-user programmers. Still other systems are designed to emulate strategies or heuristics that users themselves appear to employ when looking for reusable code, thereby simplifying the task of choosing which existing programs to run or reuse (e.g. Gross et al., 2010; Scaffidi et al., 2009). While spotting a rat in the garden can be an unpleasant experience and they can damage fruit, vegetables, bulbs, plants, shed doors and wires, they should also be considered a serious health risk.¬† I know that putting manure on the garden is good for it, but what I didn‚Äôt know was that HORSE manure will completely destroy the soil and take 7-20 years to recover, whereas COW manure is what I should have used in the first place. Cows have 4 stomachs so their food is digested completely and ready to use as fertilizer, while on the other hand, horses only have one stomach so their food is somewhat digested and still has a ways to go before it is completely broken down. Horse manure will burn everything up in your garden and kill your trees. DON‚ÄôT USE IT! Most are problems gardeners experience almost anywhere, but some problems are more specific to our area. In our resource guide, we have followed an integrated pest management approach where simple, safe, and less invasive strategies are listed first. This is the same approach we use with visitors to our walk-in Plant Doctor service located in the Kemper Center for Home Gardening¬†as well as with callers to our phone-in Horticultural Answer Service. Recommendations using chemical pesticides, though not excluded in an integrated pest management approach, generally appear lower down in the list of recommended strategies. Strictly organic strategies¬†are pointed out. You can look up pest and problems by plant or pest category. What sets us apart? When plant care problems arise in the rose garden, the herb garden, or the pumpkin patch, gardening can get a little frustrating. Suddenly you find yourself in the role of Plant Doctor, without any formal education in the field of diagnosing and healing sick plants. Salts applied to walkways and roads in winter may splash into garden; keep salty water off foliage. Flush soil with good water. Test soil for soluble salt level. There are several reasons for poor garden drainage. On new housing estates, it is often caused by compacted soil as a result of builders’ lorries and trucks. This combined with the mixing of sub-soil and topsoil when all the trenches and foundations were excavated often leads to a heavy, wet plot. These links will help you with some shade gardening ideas. You might appreciate a post I wrote earlier this year on the herbicide problem with straw bale gardening: http://www.thesurvivalgardener.com/danger-of-straw-bale-gardening-no-one-is-mentioning/ I have trouble with weeds and brush in the garden. I hope this book could help me with these problem ¬ę¬†The $10 billion-a-year U.S. horticulture industry is based on cheap oil and cheap plastics,¬†¬Ľ writes Beth Botts in the Chicago Tribune. Botts has won awards for her eloquent writing on the problems of garden plastics. Chief among them is the lack of standards for materials, colors or sizes of pots and other garden plastics. Often the materials used are not even identified — making them devilishly hard to recycle. And the industry shies away from reuse because of the risks of spreading plant disease. Hi Hazel, thank you for that. Have never had nest box as neither me or partner great at DIY. My garden is very wildlife friendly as in a lot of it is untouched! I have 2 large hedges, laurel in front & I don’t know what the other one is usual hedging plant(box?), but it is a bit of a monster now, probably 15ft, neighbour has asked if he could cut it to 8ft which is fine as long as he does it soon before nesting starts. ūüôā Hi Jill, If you‚Äôre going to do raised beds, look into square foot gardening if you haven‚Äôt already. The author Mel Bartholomew has a blend that he uses for soil that drains well, but still retains moisture. It‚Äôs what I want to do next year. Several years ago, i had a problem with something eating strawberries in my garden. I put out glue boards (2) to catch whatever it was, and caught 2 cardinals, both of which were killed by the glue boards. Not a pretty site….and i was devastated. I will never use glue boards again….and am always sure to plant enough for everyone/everything….. Does a cottage garden require a cottage? Stewart brought her gardening talents to the concrete jungle back in 2008. That’s when she made an agreement with management at the Westport¬†post office to plan a community garden in front of the facility. What sets us apart?
