My garden is too big Visit http://www.jandjacres.net for more hobby farm activities. We have been having a problem with our cucumber plant. The plant started out kind of slow. At first it even seemed to refuse to climb. However, that changed, and suddenly it was taking over a huge section of our garden fence. For a few weeks, things were great, more and more blooms, more and more climbing. Then, suddenly, leaves started turning yellow, then brown. It all seemed to radiate from the base of the plant. After posting pictures of the problem on our Facebook page, the best advise was that a vine borer had got into it and to take it out before it hatched its eggs. So that is what I did. I tore it down, pulled it up, and split it open. You know what I found? The inside of a cucumber vine. That’s it. No bugs, no holes. Because wireless devices such as smartphones are often limited to the content provided by their carriers, the portion of the Web that is available to wireless users is frequently referred to as a walled garden. Speaking of the Web as a whole, AOL is generally considered the major – and most successful – practitioner of the walled garden approach. According to a spokesperson from Disney (arguing against the recent AOL – Time Warner merger), 85% of AOL users never leave AOL territory; according to The Economist, almost 40% of the time Americans spend on the Web is within the confines of AOL’s walled garden. What gardening dilemma are you facing at the moment in your garden? My own garden has at least a dozen dilemmas, mainly to do with living in a cottage. The neighbors are very close but once you walk down toward the field that we back on to (where lambs are hopping about right now), then it is completely private. Though rather far from the house. Since writing the book I am changing my garden completely, after 12 years of indecision. I now have the confidence, and trust my ideas. There’s no fighting against nature and plants will adapt to prevailing conditions. James has used native plantings in the garden and likewise, gardening with nature rather than against it gets results. It’s a gardener’s truism that you should always plant according to the conditions particular to your situation. Plant acid-loving plants in acid soils. If they need full sun, choose a sunny spot and if they need lots of water, forget gritty, parched soil. It needn’t be harder than that to start a garden off on a healthy footing. Sometimes there will be problems in the vegetable garden. There is always a cause and there is often a cure or control. Heading somewhere? Plan your trip with our destination guides to our favorite public gardens, hotels, restaurants, and shops. Roses, the world’s favourite flowers, are great garden performers that, if well cared for, will live for many years. I read this post with great interest, as I garden on limestone and so I have brought in many things to try to improve my soil. My most recent efforts have been with wood chips due to becoming acquainted with a man who has a tree-trimming business, and leaves, which we have picked up curbside from people who have our phone number to call when they have them bagged and ready to take away. I hate to tell you that we will no longer be doing either of these things. If you can begin to see the trillions of microbial creatures in your garden as your hidden workforce, then you are on the path to happy gardening. When we recognise that we are dealing with a workforce, then we understand that if we mistreat our workers, there will be increasing problems. Conversely, if we can look after them, they will look after us. Nutrition Gardening® is essentially a workplace health and safety issue. Health is about providing food and ideal living conditions for your workforce, while safety is about protecting them from toxins and poor soil management decisions. Creating a two-level garden linked by steps and flanked by split-level pools fed with waterfalls gives the space more interest. The design is bordered by raised flowerbeds and built-in bench seating, which can seat more guests than garden chairs. A colourful buddleia is an ideal standard plant for this kind of garden; easy to care for, it will attract lots of bees and butterflies when it flowers. Does a cottage garden require a cottage? Yes, I’ve heard a lot of people complaining about strange gardens this year. I don’t know what to think… Free personalised gardening advice We luckily have a source that swears they assay each load of compost before they use in the 3- and 4-way garden soil mixes. We used them again this year when we remade the front yards raised beds. Everything we planted flourished. Unfortunately, a lot of people start to think about composting in the Spring. They’re anxious to get out in the garden, have heard—or know—that compost is a great natural fertilizer, soil amendment and disease preventer, and want to get a pile going. But nine times out of ten—maybe more like 9.9 times out of ten—they don’t have THE most important ingredient: Shredded fall leaves. You’re welcome am66,  I hope you continue to enjoy your bird friendly garden and see lots of nice visitors, especially during the spring season.  If you have a nesting box you may find a Blue Tit will find your garden and maybe raise a brood.  There is lots of information on this website for nesting boxes and attracting more birds into the garden.  If you do want to add a nesting box, for better success try facing it between North and East direction and about 10ft off the ground.  For sparrows you could put a box under the eaves of the house.      Good luck, sounds like you have a lovely garden with shrubs to attract the birds 🙂 Not sure what the problem is? While I was away from my house for a year, no one tended to my garden. I came back and the weeds were 10′ tall! They had also taken root in the brick walkways and caused a lot of upheal of blocks. Now, no matter how many weeds I pull, more keep coming back. And the roots of some are so huge and can’t even be dug pu without disturbing so many bricks and the raised garden beds. What can I do, short of ripping everything out sand starting all over? My garden is a car park Strong shapes such as circles (arranged diagonally) will make a small garden appear wider and longer. At the heart of this garden is an open grassy circle (to give kids room to run about), while the smaller paved circles are used as seating/dining areas. Stepping stones lead to a tucked-away play area. Children will also love the shape of the allium plant, or ornamental onion. It flowers in early summer, likes most soils and is easy to care for.
