Winter doesn’t mean you can’t have a garden. It just means you’ll need to do a little extra work. The biggest problem with my garden is the soil or lack of it. Our soil is so sandy and no matter what I do to it, I cannot get it to become the kind of soil which is good for planting vegetables. I did get some really good cucumbers this year but that is all that has come up. Extractive agriculture has seen the long-term, persistent removal of these broad spectrum trace minerals with no replacement. In fact, it could be argued that most plants no longer have the associated hormonal support to achieve their genetic potential. The exception is the seaweed plant, which exists in a soup comprising the perfect balance of all minerals. Consequently, this plant contains forty times more of these hormonal helpers than land plants. What does this mean for this sea plant? Well, it is the fastest-growing plant on the planet, producing 30 cm of new growth every day. We can boost our hormone-deficient, garden plants with seaweed fertiliser. In this context, kelp becomes an essential supplement for a healthy, vigorous, food-producing garden. You can purchase copies of Indira Naidoo’s garden cookbooks The Edible Balcony and The Edible City at www.dymocks.com.au.  For testing your soils contact your State University the Ag Extension. You can contact  your state Department of Agriculture. You may want to try living mulches. They have been a great alternative for me, as well as improving the overall soil condition. There is great information out there. http://www.veganicpermaculture.com/agroecology.html Happy gardening! !! Mulch is one of the unsung heroes of landscape design. It’s highly portable, malleable and, for certain types of mulch, you can even make your own! Areas shaded by large trees can be transformed overnight from eyesores to eye-openers by applying an attractive mulch. For all its value, there is much misunderstanding about the use of this landscaping solution, and I receive numerous questions about garden mulch from readers. There are as many types of landscaping mulch as there are landscape challenges. Mulch is sometimes used in conjunction with landscape fabrics. Well Doctor, we’ve always said that part of the fun of gardening, is learning new things. The first step is to diagnose plant problems. Put on your investigator’s cap, examine the symptoms, identify the causes, administer the cure (most are quite simple), and learn some new « stuff ». As we gardeners say “NEXT year things will be better!” Reader points out the benefits of the banana slugs in gardens We luckily have a source that swears they assay each load of compost before they use in the 3- and 4-way garden soil mixes. We used them again this year when we remade the front yards raised beds. Everything we planted flourished. We all lead pretty busy lives these days and between juggling our work, family, sporting and social lives we’re left with little time for the things such as gardening, baking or even getting a good homemade meal on the table. Pollinate with brush, or by shaking plant so that pollen will fall to female flowers (depending on kind). Attract pollinators to garden. Do not kill pollinating insects. My garden is too long and narrow Don’t let aphids ruin your garden. Use these tips to keep your plants safe. It’s a small gardening world after all. Where: In clusters, under leaves, and on new plant growth of indoor and outdoor gardens. Just wondering where your garden is located? Thanks. Are you in Richmond, Virginia? Thanks. Suzanne Flynn I garden on rock  Before you begin, you need to narrow your wish-list to your top priorities. In a bigger garden, for example, you might have a barbecue area; in a small garden, you may have to settle for creating a paved space for a portable barbecue and devise a storage plan when it’s not in use. Small family gardens are hardest to plan as you’ll need to find room for a play area. As always, we try to do things a little different at PlantPlots, so you won’t find what chemicals to spray onto your dahlias or how to prune your roses, there are plenty of websites that so just that. Instead our advice tries to deal with the real issues we all face in the garden. I’m sad you’ve had such trouble with your garden this year. I want to suggest you research the use of chemtrails in your area. These are easy to see in the sky when they’re being dropped from airplanes. We created a clear plastic roof over our garden to avoid their harmful chemicals. I believe it helped us with our first garden this year. Chemtrails are happening all over the world and have been for quite awhile. You can search “chemtrails” on the web. It is also called Geo-Engineering. A native New Yorker, she spent three decades in the Midwest before recently returning to the East Coast; that gave her a different gardening perspective to Glassman’s California experience and broadened the book’s overall appeal, he said. Images Publishing, the Australian book company, is based in Victoria, a state with a similar climate to California on the southeast coast of the island continent. Many of the design and gardening challenges (such as smaller spaces, less water) faced by Californians can apply to gardens down under, too. In this area we have dug down and replaced it with new topsoil, dug compost and manure in, we also have put a sump in which on clay isn’t the best but it takes some of the water which would otherwise run towards the house (slope on the garden is towards the house). The difference for the better us obvious this year. Extractive agriculture has seen the long-term, persistent removal of these broad spectrum trace minerals with no replacement. We pride ourselves on our dedication to resolving whatever issues you have with your garden and offer comprehensive solutions for those little neglected areas you don’t quite know what to do with. Finally, an answer to what happened to me this year. I had a beautiful bed of over 6′ tomato plants in my 6×6 garden I had carefully filled with rich earth composted in with commercial manure sold locally only to have them start with the curling leaves and withered plants. No insect damage, no sign of over watering or blight, just green withered leaves. Never happened before, blamed it on plants being diseased from purchase but had several different varieties. Now after reading all this info I have a different perspective. Not sure I’ll try again next year but if I do, I’ll certainly research back to this blog. Thank you for posting. My garden has been a « fail » the last couple of years…not sure what’s wrong….fertilizer, too wet, bad soil, ???? I have a small garden so I use my grass clippings for the deep mulch method. For the first time since moving to Idaho (southwestern corner) I have a garden that has been producing in all the heat we get each summer. Unfortunately weeds started taking over my grass and I had to apply broad-leaf herbicide. Lucky for me I read some where that it kills tomato plants before I applied those grass cuttings to my garden.
