In search of a publisher for his latest book, Sacramento garden designer Michael Glassman found a perfect fit an ocean away – in Australia. The result is a problem-solving work of art with built-in appeal on both sides of the Pacific. Most people will take some pride in their gardens to one degree or another. Of course, some will be keener than others to show off their green fingers, and will want to create a spectacle of colour through the addition of flowers and a well-manicured lawn. Have you added a commercial potting mix or soil to your window boxes or planting beds that contains a moisture-retentive polymer? These ploymers soak up water and then slowing release back into the soil; they have a clear jelly like appearance when hydrated. Another possibility is slime molds, a single-celled organism, that lives on dead plant material, often in lawns or garden beds. If you suspect slime mold, take a sample to a nearby office of the state agriculture office for identification. You can dig around slime mold organisms and remove them from the garden and dispose of them, but the spores that begin their growth may remain in the garden and form new organisms. How about adding VOLES to the list of garden Pests. I have one that has eaten everyone of my marigolds and chwews off one whole patch of Bee Balm. Now the beast is eating my tomatoes to get all of the seeds. Yes it is a vole because I have seen him or them scurrying in an around my planting beds. I have put out three live catch traps and all have remained empty. I put out glue boards up next to the foundation of the house and he kicked dirt all over them. I put out poison and it hasn’t been touched in two weeks. These thinks are the bane of my summer gardening. My garden is excessively hot and dry Just had similar experience this year. Moved far, far away, bought a farm in a climate where people actually grow crops…not just grass hay. Inquired about the “free” compost pile at landfill then got schooled by local gardeners that some farmers spray “Grazon” (had NEVER heard of it!) and the likes and to be very wary about buying topsoil/compost from local sources. Was so excited to find big round bales of straw on my place left from past owner. Built amazing lasagne style gardens with this straw and also mulched top of most beds with it. Found out it was sprayed and did my best to get the mulch off but the lasagne beds were hopeless. Wow. I lost almost everything that had been planted in those beds and that was the only variable that was different. Dear Real Living: I read with significant consternation the Friday, Jan. 17, article headlined « Prevent a garden slugfest with baits, maintenance. » Perhaps my having attended Pentacle Theatre’s production of « Dr. Doolittle » inspired me to point out a gross injustice. The article itself was fine, but the accompanying photo clearly pictured a Pacific banana slug (Ariolimax columbianus). This species, by far the largest and most obvious slug in our parts, is NOT a garden pest. These critters feed on detritus and dead plant material, not on living vegetation. As such, they actually help clean up our yards, not exfoliate them. Unfortunately, the SJ article will most certainly encourage people not aware of these slugs’ good intentions to dispatch them at every opportunity. Bad for the garden, truly tragic for the banana slugs. — Alex Bourdeau, West Salem I detest orange in the garden  As you can see from the attached photos, we require some privacy by the low fence, but would like to keep the garden bed as you approach from the street side (seen on the right in the photograph). We’re not worried about keeping the grass – paving and gravel are fine. We look forward to seeing what you can come up with for us. Joan and Jim Gooch, Tauranga Many gardens are overrun with the slow-moving creatures. Symptoms: Leaves seem curled, burnt, crispy and/or brittle. Leaves are yellow or brown in color. Soil in garden bed looks cracked Join our newsletter to receive the latest garden tips. My garden is excessively hot and dry Will it take much looking after? Raised beds can be much easier to look after than borders and you won’t need to get on all fours to tend them. The rest of this garden is given over to paving, which will only need an occasional sweep. We collect missed garden waste collections once a week on a scheduled day. Answer: It won’t be possible to completely eradicate the grasshoppers, but there are some things you can do to keep their population low enough to prevent any serious damage to your yards and gardens. Thanks for the info, it amazing what you learn on here, I would never have thought a sparrow hawk would be around in gardens in built up area. Luba has to choose one of the buckets in order to water the garden as fast as possible (as mentioned above, each hour she will water some continuous subsegment of length ai if she chooses the i-th bucket). Help her to determine the minimum number of hours she has to spend watering the garden. It is guaranteed that Luba can always choose a bucket so it is possible water the garden. Very interested in this phenomenon. I’m in Virginia and just about every gardener in my neighborhood is complaining about their tomatoes this year. My sister who is a veteran gardener commented to me that she got her first ripe tomato in mid-July. She anticipated the usual progression of ripening tomatoes but the ripening just stopped. It took several weeks more for the tomatoes to ripen. If you’ve never grown anything before, start small with just a few plants, herbs or flowers. I’ve visited Patrick’s community garden; it’s a nice little urban oasis. But that urban setting makes being realistic about potential vermin problems crucial. Its very easy to breed the nasty, dangerous things, and much harder to get the population to go in the other direction. So here are some ideas. Expert know-how on solving gardening problems & more We must then eliminate y as a variable. To do so, recall that Sam’s garden must have area $A = 400 \text{ ft}^2$. Since the garden’s rectangular area is given by $$A = xy = 400$$ we can solve for y in terms of x: $$y = \dfrac{400}{x}$$ Substituting this expression for y into our expression above for the cost C: \[ \begin{align*} C &= \dfrac{3}{2}y + 2x \\[8px] &= \dfrac{3}{2}\left(\dfrac{400}{x} \right) + 2x \\[8px] &= \frac{600}{x} + 2x \end{align*} \] The expression for C is now a function of the single variable x, as required. eracto eracto Maca du Pérou Tonus Fortis Eron Plus Maxman eracto Masculin Active TestX Core Masculin Active
