Free personalised gardening advice I have squash and cukes in my florida garden. Both have bloomed well but neither one has developed anything. Help. Even if it *were* possible to deter moles from tunneling your lawn or garden by tarring corncobs, planting gum in the ground without touching it, or setting up pinwheel wind-farms—which it most definitely isn’t—all you’ve done is solve your problem at the expense of introducing a problem for your neighbors. Which is a crappy thing to do to someone who lives next door to you. Mulch is one of the unsung heroes of landscape design. It’s highly portable, malleable and, for certain types of mulch, you can even make your own! Areas shaded by large trees can be transformed overnight from eyesores to eye-openers by applying an attractive mulch. For all its value, there is much misunderstanding about the use of this landscaping solution, and I receive numerous questions about garden mulch from readers. There are as many types of landscaping mulch as there are landscape challenges. Mulch is sometimes used in conjunction with landscape fabrics. The key to your small-space urban gardening success has a lot to do with the types of pots or planters you select. Photo: Vegepod Luba has to choose one of the buckets in order to water the garden as fast as possible (as mentioned above, each hour she will water some continuous subsegment of length ai if she chooses the i-th bucket). Help her to determine the minimum number of hours she has to spend watering the garden. It is guaranteed that Luba can always choose a bucket so it is possible water the garden. The most important benefit of fungi, however, is their capacity to create crumb structure in your soil. This is the most desirable characteristic for garden soils. A soil with crumb structure can breathe freely while allowing ease of root growth and ideal water infiltration. Earthworms move unimpeded through these aggregates, as do beneficial nematodes and microarthropods. You can plunge your hands deep into this medium and it smells good enough to eat. Gardening is pure pleasure when you have achieved this holy grail of good soil management, but it is not possible without nurturing your fungal workforce. Life Force® Instant Humus™ involves super-concentrated soluble humic acid granules. Two teaspoons of these black crystals are added to a watering can full of water, and applied to 10 m2 of soil. You will almost hear your fungi rejoice! What would you suggest to deter monkeys from raiding the garden? Oh my gosh I’m so sorry this happened to you! How discouraging. Do you have access to wood chips? We do deep wood chips the same way you use hay and it works great in our area. We have access to free chips easily though. You can’t mix them in the soil and you plant below them. They turn into compost and build up the top soil over time. We add fresh chips 2 times a year to the top. Sorry about the garden! Utah State University Extension provides informal education outreach to residents throughout the state. This question-and-answer column is designed to give you research-based information whether your gardening interest is producing fresh food, creating a landscape area or anything in between. Have you added a commercial potting mix or soil to your window boxes or planting beds that contains a moisture-retentive polymer? These ploymers soak up water and then slowing release back into the soil; they have a clear jelly like appearance when hydrated. Another possibility is slime molds, a single-celled organism, that lives on dead plant material, often in lawns or garden beds. If you suspect slime mold, take a sample to a nearby office of the state agriculture office for identification. You can dig around slime mold organisms and remove them from the garden and dispose of them, but the spores that begin their growth may remain in the garden and form new organisms. The biggest problem with my garden is the soil or lack of it. Our soil is so sandy and no matter what I do to it, I cannot get it to become the kind of soil which is good for planting vegetables. I did get some really good cucumbers this year but that is all that has come up. Hello am66,     Is there any way you can find a space in your back garden for the feeders, I assume that is fenced off for your greyhound as he would be a good deterrent to the cats.  I’m sorry you found feathers and remains of a bird but it is possible a Sparrowhawk could have predated the bird and not a cat as I think cats tend to take their prey away/ home and in tact.     There is an ultrasonic device that seems to get good reviews on Amazon website  HERE   and I know a fellow member on here (  Monkeycheese ) has just purchased two of them so maybe when he has had chance to test them out he can advise you how well they work.    Good luck, hope the cats get the message to stay out of your garden so you can continue to enjoy the visiting birds.    Check for grubs curled in soil at base of plants. Keep garden clean of debris and plant residue. Keep garden weed-free. Use cardboard collars around seedlings. Sam wants to build a garden fence to protect a rectangular 400 square-foot planting area. His next-door neighbor agrees to pay for half of the fence that borders her property; Sam will pay the rest of the cost. What are the dimensions of the planting area that will minimize Sam’s cost to build the fence? (You may leave your answer as a square root; you don’t have to find a decimal result.) On a garden or driveway Creating a two-level garden linked by steps and flanked by split-level pools fed with waterfalls gives the space more interest. The design is bordered by raised flowerbeds and built-in bench seating, which can seat more guests than garden chairs. What would you suggest to deter monkeys from raiding the garden? White patches on cucumber leaves is likely a sign of powdery mildew (white mold on fruits is likely southern blight or white mold). To control and kill fungal spores of powdery mildew get a fungal spray at the garden center or add a tablespoon of baking soda, 2.5 tablespoons of vegetable oil, and a teaspoon of liquid soap (not detergent) to a gallon of water and spray the plants. Bean leaves that shrivel: the first thing to check is soil moisture–the soil should stay evenly moist early in the season when roots have not yet grown deep; make sure your plants are getting water every couple of days. If watering is not the problem, then bacterial blight or mosaic virus may be attacking your plants–remove diseased plants and replant with disease resistant cultivars.
