My garden is overlooked on several sides 6. Determine the maxima and minima as necessary. Remember to check the endpoints if there are any. Recall that we found above that $y = \dfrac{400}{x}$. Hence when the width $x = \sqrt{300}$, the garden’s length y must be: \[ \begin{align*} y &= \frac{400}{x} \\[8px] &= \frac{400}{\sqrt{300}} \\[8px] &= \frac{400}{\sqrt{100}\sqrt{3}}\\[8px] &= \frac{400}{10\sqrt{3}} = \frac{40}{\sqrt{3}} \end{align*} \] Hence Sam’s cost is minimized when the garden has I have a small garden so I use my grass clippings for the deep mulch method. For the first time since moving to Idaho (southwestern corner) I have a garden that has been producing in all the heat we get each summer. Unfortunately weeds started taking over my grass and I had to apply broad-leaf herbicide. Lucky for me I read some where that it kills tomato plants before I applied those grass cuttings to my garden. So … you’ve been reading my garden columns and I’ve convinced you that if a former news anchor can grow a garden on a balcony, how hard can it be? As much as it pains me to say this, I would NOT use any more hay on your garden until you can absolutely, 100% verify the hay or field it came from has not been sprayed with any sort of herbicide. Strong shapes such as circles (arranged diagonally) will make a small garden appear wider and longer. At the heart of this garden is an open grassy circle (to give kids room to run about), while the smaller paved circles are used as seating/dining areas. Stepping stones lead to a tucked-away play area. Children will also love the shape of the allium plant, or ornamental onion. It flowers in early summer, likes most soils and is easy to care for. Luba has to choose one of the buckets in order to water the garden as fast as possible (as mentioned above, each hour she will water some continuous subsegment of length ai if she chooses the i-th bucket). Help her to determine the minimum number of hours she has to spend watering the garden. It is guaranteed that Luba can always choose a bucket so it is possible water the garden. How about adding VOLES to the list of garden Pests. I have one that has eaten everyone of my marigolds and chwews off one whole patch of Bee Balm. Now the beast is eating my tomatoes to get all of the seeds. Yes it is a vole because I have seen him or them scurrying in an around my planting beds. I have put out three live catch traps and all have remained empty. I put out glue boards up next to the foundation of the house and he kicked dirt all over them. I put out poison and it hasn’t been touched in two weeks. These thinks are the bane of my summer gardening. Books are great sources of gardening information! We love to help gardeners here at Gardening Know How, we are a great source of information and love to help with all your garden questions! I have used non-organic hay in the garden that I know was sprayed with broadleaf herbicides for 10 years and never had a problem with my plants. Maybe the concentrations weren’t high enough. But, 3 years ago, a neighbor up the valley from us sprayed his fields with 2,4-D and within a week my 150 tomato plants looked just like yours do. I didn’t connect it until the next year when another neighbor sprayed his fields with 2,4-D and I lost my tomato plants again and all of my lettuce that was just starting to head, bolted. I started talking to people and doing research and apparently, certain types of 2,4-D can really drift given the correct conditions. It affects plants drastically just by drift. Maybe you should look into the possibility that a neighbor sprayed something like 2,4-D on fields or lawns. Once it affects the plants, thats it for those plants. I let mine grow but they put on little to no flowers or fruit. This year, I planted in the same spot and didn’t remove the plant residue last fall. I waited until a week after the neighbor did his spraying and then transplanted my plants. Bingo, I had no trouble with my plants and they put on a good crop for us. So, it doesn’t seem to linger in the soil, at least for us. I think I poisoned my garden. You’re welcome am66,  I hope you continue to enjoy your bird friendly garden and see lots of nice visitors, especially during the spring season.  If you have a nesting box you may find a Blue Tit will find your garden and maybe raise a brood.  There is lots of information on this website for nesting boxes and attracting more birds into the garden.  If you do want to add a nesting box, for better success try facing it between North and East direction and about 10ft off the ground.  For sparrows you could put a box under the eaves of the house.      Good luck, sounds like you have a lovely garden with shrubs to attract the birds 🙂 We’ve never tried the deep mulch method of gardening, but we do use cover crops like winter rye and medium red clover to build up the organic matter in our soil. This year we planted the clover in between rows and hills in the garden with great results. I never would have thought of herbicides or pesticides on hay. How disappointing if that’s what it turns out to be… Use our guide to prevent and control weeds in your garden. I have a constant battle with weeds in my garden. This house was purchased a year ago but found after a few months the grass didn’t look great. We notice that walking on the grass that there is a squelching sound pretty much all the time and try to keep off it. Garden is L shaped with a section going behind the detached garage. The garden is North facing too. We moved into our current house two years ago, it’s twelve years old, north facing rear garden. The lawn area (and most of the garden to be honest is a mess), we got a lot standing water when it rains, and the grass squelches when walked on. The area closest to the house is the worst. The cause was of course builders rubble, clay and clay subsoil which is just below the turf (which is a shockingly poor turf). Question 3 is something that I’m starting to see as the bridge between “Length 12” and “Length x” from the original problem statement.  If you can do it with 1000, then you can do it with x.  Question 6 was also nice because some students used their formula to show that the garden length would not be a whole number if it used 2011 tiles, while other students made the reasonable observation that every garden tile number is even. It’s a small gardening world after all. Failing that, we can help you create the garden you’d love to – and we only need some photo’s! In the first test the best option is to choose the bucket that allows to water the segment of length 3. We can’t choose the bucket that allows to water the segment of length 5 because then we can’t water the whole garden. Being in touch with nature improves your health and overall happiness. It is very relaxing to do things in nature and natural experiences can reduce stress and leave us feeling peaceful. There is no better way to get in touch with nature and natural rhythms than growing and caring for your own food. You don’t have to have a garden or even a yard, you can grow beautiful plants on your balcony or even in your living room. Even a few plants will produce a good amount of food for you to eat or share with friends and family.
