I’m daunted by the garden I’ve inherited Once again, it is always better to have as many different plants in the blend as feasible, in recognition of the “more the merrier” principle. A good home garden cover crop blend might include ryegrass, barley, wheat, lucerne, three clovers, daikon radish, kale and silverbeet. You will note that all species are edible here and you could easily snip as required for a chlorophyll-packed addition to your green smoothie. You could even juice the young wheatgrass and barley grass at the height of their antioxidant powers. Because wireless devices such as smartphones are often limited to the content provided by their carriers, the portion of the Web that is available to wireless users is frequently referred to as a walled garden. Speaking of the Web as a whole, AOL is generally considered the major – and most successful – practitioner of the walled garden approach. According to a spokesperson from Disney (arguing against the recent AOL – Time Warner merger), 85% of AOL users never leave AOL territory; according to The Economist, almost 40% of the time Americans spend on the Web is within the confines of AOL’s walled garden. My garden is too small Reader points out the benefits of the banana slugs in gardens Two very good things happened in 2012. Soon after the launch of Gardenista (No. 1), UK-based Kendra Wilson became our first contributing writer. She immediately took our readers—and me—by the hand and began to gently reassure us there is nothing scary or complicated about gardening. I’ve alluded several times in my newsletter, and here on the blog, that I’ve had a rather bizarre, and quite unproductive gardening year. My garden is an awkward shape Thank you for sharing this. It certainly would have been easier to just blog the good events. We have noticed residual effects from straw we have got from non-organic neighbors (our organic friends won’t sell straw as it is returned to the soil). I would try a trial with some plants in the garden next year to see if the results are the same (even if you don’t intend to harvest and use). The reason I say this is that we have had a weird gardening season here as well with low results on a number of vegetable crops (and we are not the only ones to see the same thing). Not the same problems as you describe but far from typical. Hopefully this is an aberration for you and not a contamination issue. I enjoy you site and wish you the best. It would appear the tomato problem is a nation wide issue. If that’s the case, is it solar activity, chemtrails, acid rain, etc???? Many gardeners in my area who never use compost or mulch and are having the same problem. Solution: There are a few different options to help hold back soil such as rock gardens, retaining walls, erosion fabric or even terracing. The easiest option is to grow a deep-rooting ground cover such as pachysandra (shade) or creeping rosemary (sun). A community garden surrounding the post office in Westport is facing backlash from USPS officials. To prevent it coming back, collect the grass clippings if your mower has a grass box, or rake up all clippings after each mowing. Remedies: Some garden beds don’t need to be fertilized but rather have their PH levels checked and have compost added. Use a natural and organic fertilizer whenever possible. Solution: Many gardeners would not consider shade a problem as there are dozens upon dozens of shade-loving plants. Fill a shady landscape with hosta, hellebores, bleeding hearts, hollies, azaleas, boxwood, ferns, ginger, English ivy, hydrangea and ajuga. Two very good things happened in 2012. It just means you’ll need to do a little extra work. This was an interesting possibility that came up when I started talking with my local gardening neighbor. Animal manures can be high in salts, which can cause issues when compost with high-levels of salt is added to a vegetable garden. However, I ruled out salt in my compost for these reasons: We asked garden designer Katrina Wells of Earth Designs to come up with three different designs. Our tip is to choose light-reflecting colours and add details you’d find indoors, such as mirrors, to increase the sense of space. As for budget, we’ve suggested where you can make savings. All you have to do is choose the right plan for you. I had an experience this year with my mulch garden. I used a sprinkler with our well water (artesian water with high pH) and watered during a hot day (95+) temps. We usually use a soaker hose or rainwater, but tried the sprinkler this year. It totally burned the tomato, potato, and melon leaves. The rest of the garden didn’t look that great either. Another lesson learned after over 30 years of gardening. Dear Carol, We have a problem area which we are keen to see turned into a stylish courtyard. The site faces east and only receives the morning sun. The soil quality is reasonable but will require additional nutrients (the house was tenanted for 15 years – the last eight by non-gardeners). We thought of having a perfumed garden area, and we like hydrangeas and star jasmine as well as the sound of trickling water. This can be very frustrating! https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/deer/deer-repellents.htm My garden is windy https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/vgen/the-layout-of-your-vegetable-garden.htm https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/vgen/layout-options-for-gardens.htm Great! A blank slate! Visit local garden centers and greenhouses. Check out other gardens in your neighborhood for inspiration. Everything looked fine when I first put them in the garden. I planted my tomatoes (Amish Paste) in a new spot this year– normally they are along my fence, but this year, I had more plants so I stuck them in the area I usually plant my onions. I mulched them and watered them, and sat back to watch them grow. Be sure you are not overwatering–tomatoes that have been in the garden a few weeks can be watered every three or four days. Allow the first inch of soil to dry before watering again. Pale leaves may also be an indication of pest insects feeding on the leaves; check the undersides of leaves to be sure pest insects are not harboring there. Where: One of the most destructive pests of both garden variety and wild asparagus. It may be a shady or dry area under a tree that doesn’t grow anything, a wet area or a sun drenched area. You may just want to hide a storage area in your garden, waste bins, an unsightly feature or you may want privacy from your neighbours or you may be building or renovating a new property and have planning conditions that you need to overcome. We have made a few inquiries via the internet and bought a guidance pack from WHSmith. It would seem to me, however, that because my son receives a regular fixed rate and has no say as to what jobs he undertakes, he has to be considered an employee of our friend. I think cleaners can count themselves as self-employed and undertaking gardening doesn’t seem so far removed.
